Walklet are Modular Public Parks. Prototype deployed on 22nd Street and Bartlett in San Francisco, CA

Inspired by Rebar’s PARK(ing) Day and other efforts to convert parking spaces into people places, cities around the United States are transforming excess roadway into public plazas, pocket parks and experimental sites for new forms of urban infrastructure.

To help support this growing trend, Rebar has created “Walklet”—a modular, flexible sidewalk extension system designed to create new public spaces for people by extending the pedestrian realm into the parking lane.

The installation at 22nd and Bartlett in San Francisco is part of a pilot project supported by the City's Pavement to Parks program. The collection of benches, planters, bike racks, and tables, sheathed in stained bamboo decking and red-painted reclaimed wood, will be in place for six months, and if it's well-received by the community, could remain in place indefinitely.

How Walklet Works

Each three-foot wide Walklet module provides a single, specific program that can be mixed and matched with other Walklet modules to create the right design combination for each unique site.

Walklet extends the sidewalk surface into the street but provides much more than just a place to walk—it creates an adjustable, flexible, full-scale laboratory for developing and refining the perfect combination of user programs.

Walklet are available in a variety of configurations, including modules for seating, bike parking, eating, and planters. Custom designs are also available.

Walklet units link securely to each other and to the curb, with an easy height adjustment system and optional traffic-side safety railing. Best of all, they come fully assembled, ready to plug, play and use.

Will Walklet work for my street?

Walklet can be extended to any length of curb by linking modules together, and can be be installed easily, with minimal tools. No construction is required on-site. Each unit can be lifted by 2-4 people and carried in a car or small pickup.

Will Walklet really stand up to urban conditions?

Walklet are designed for easy maintenance and maximum durability. Each Walklet module is clad with outdoor-grade bamboo decking, which is comparable in durability to ipé or teak but is more sustainably produced. Adjustable trim pieces at the base of the traffic side of each Walklet keep unwanted street debris out, but allow stormwater to flow unimpeded to the curb and gutter. Special end modules allow street sweeping machines to drive easily around a Walklet installation.

The robust internal frame is built from structural tube steel, and is designed for a long service life under the demanding conditions of outdoor public space. The adjustable supports on the frame are rated at 5,000 lbs each. Decking and exterior panels can be easily replaced should that become necessary. Walklet may look pretty, but they offer a tough, functional and comfortable way to extend and improve the pedestrian realm.

Walklet meet ADA requirements of .25-inch surface gaps and units can be configured to accommodate wheelchair seating next to benches.

Are Walklet for sale?

We're currently studying the Walklet prototype to see how people use it and what improvements can be made before the next production run. If you are interested in buying or leasing Walklet for a curb in your neighborhood, please contact Rebar at info@walklet.org for a consultation and prices.
